Education throughout the history
is pictured as students going to classrooms, interacting with teachers and
classmates and creating a life in school separated from their own family life.
It is so hard to imagine how learning could take place without the four walls
of the classroom. This difficult imagination is indeed true, not until the rise
of online degree education.

Online degree courses are like mushrooms that are sprouting
everywhere in the world. Perhaps, most web-surfers have experienced that while
surfing the net, a pop-up window will come advertising anew online degree course or online
university.

The reason why they are coming
out is because they correspond to the needs of the people nowadays. With the
birth of new technology, it is so hard to say that the usual kind of education
where students are going to school is dying. 

Online
education is offered in both undergraduate and graduate degrees. The population
of students taking up online graduate degrees is more than the online
undergraduate degrees. There are a lot of reasons behind their differences.
First the argument that education or learning is still enclosed in the four
walls of the classroom is still true for students (and parents too) taking up
undergraduate degrees. Meaning, a lot of people around the world still believe
in the student and teacher interaction and having a different life in school. Online
undergraduate degrees don't mean so much to them since it is killing the
essence of going to school and studying within the four walls of the classroom.
Though very traditional as it may seem, many students around the world,
especially those in third world countries are not fully convinced with online undergraduate degrees. This is
because these countries sometimes lack funds in education and other social
services. Students attending school is still more convenient for them.

On
the other hand, students taking up online graduate degrees are
increasing. This is because online studying is more beneficial for them instead
of reporting or attending everyday in school. Some of these students who are
taking up graduate degrees are already working; some are attending their
families while some are already old to go to school. Some employed students
taking up online graduate degrees are encouraged by their employers. In most
companies, they give educational grants to promising employees. But in the end,
it cannot be argued that these employees who will take further studies will never
be absent in work to attend their classes. To avoid this situation, meaning to
retain the competency of these promising employees, the employers recommend online
graduate degrees. 

For
those who have families already but still want to take up further studies, they
do not want to take their time going to school and forgetting their
responsibilities with their families. This is the usual reason why they prefer
taking up online graduate degrees.

In
the end, the argument is not really the breakdown of the four walls of the
classroom, with the rise of online
degree education. Because still, many believe in the power of traditional
education where students should still attend school. The better argument here
would be: when is online type of education beneficial?
